What tips the decision
Evidence lives on the dry side. The famous cardiovascular findings come from Finnish dry saunas — there is no equivalent body of steam-room cohort data. If "the studied practice" is what you want, it's sauna.
Construction reality decides most home builds. A sauna is a lined room with a heater; a steam room is a fully vapor-sealed, sloped-floor, drained, tiled enclosure with a steam generator — closer to building a custom shower than assembling a kit. That's why home saunas outnumber home steam rooms twenty to one.
Steam's real wins: respiratory comfort (congestion, dry-air winters), skin feel, and heat tolerance — 115°F at full humidity feels intense but is gentler for people who find 190°F air punishing. If that's you at the gym, that's you at home.
